**MUSIC MONDAY 2009 AND MIAC RETAILERS**

A SPECIAL INVITATION TO CANADIAN MUSIC RETAILERS

The Music Industries Association of Canada is dedicated to supporting music education programming across Canada and that is why we have partnered with the Coalition for Music Education in Canada to bring you Music Monday.

What is Music Monday?

Music Monday is a program designed to advocate the importance of music education among Canada’s youth. Schools across the nation unite, performing a single piece of music, in order to celebrate the joy and inspiration of making and listening to music. For the fifth consecutive year, the first Monday of May will be a day to fill the air, and our hearts, with music and we’d like to give you the opportunity to be involved in this truly wonderful event.

To support this effort, we ask retailers to create an opportunity for customers to add a dollar to every purchase in the name of Music Monday. Between May 1st and May 31st, all of the proceeds collected will go toward the Coalition for Music Education in Canada whose members work tirelessly to make music a part of our schools and communities.

How to contribute

MIAC encourages retailers to ask each customer if they’d like to add a dollar to their purchase in order to support music Monday. Retailers should prepare staff to give a brief account of what music Monday represents when customers demonstrate an interest. In order to track the purchase of Music Monday contributions, retailers should establish a separate SKU. Once the promotional period (May 1st – May 31st) has concluded, all proceeds should then be forwarded to the MIAC National Office who will then consolidate contributions from all participating retailers and MIAC itself before sending them to the Coalition for Music Education in Canada.

MIAC will provide retailers with necessary point of purchase items pertaining to the event including counter cards and bookmarks. In light of the growing popularity and media coverage that Music Monday has received, including a recent partnership with CBC, it is highly recommended that retailers incorporate Music Monday into their promotional and sales efforts. The month of May is an opportune time to exhibit your offerings as May marks the onset of spring concerts, festivals, and a variety of professional musical events.

Music Monday is open to all Canadian music retail dealers and we encourage you to take part by supporting Canada’s talented youth. Your proceeds will give the Coalition for Music Education in Canada the resources necessary to oversee the expansion of music Monday. Together, we can foster an awareness of the importance of providing children and young adults with an opportunity to experience music.
